We all want quick results and long-term success with fitness. There’s no doubt that the promises of 30-day programs are enticing. And yet, we know that sustained effort is required for life-long health. The key to better fitness – this month and beyond – is to incorporate the mentalities of both the hare and the tortoise.

The Hare

We’re inundated by fitness programs that promise to help us achieve our fitness goals in the shortest amount of time possible. These jackrabbit jump starts to fitness can be super motivating and help us break free from a fitness rut or a sedentary spell. As long as they’re not over-the-top, they can provide good, reasonable ways to begin or renew your fitness regimen.

But don’t get so caught up in the allure of the hare that you forget your good friend, tortoise.

The Tortoise

If the hare is the flashy life of the party, the tortoise is your slow, steady, and reliable fitness companion. The hare sells a ‘better’ you in 21 days… and hopefully, those 21 days are achievable and injury-free. The tortoise promises modest fitness gains over a longer period of time. A harder sell, for sure. But a more realistic one.

Negotiating the Road Ahead

Realize that the hare can be fun, motivating, and help you take leaps up in your fitness level. Think of your time with hare as ‘sprints’. Whether it’s 30 days in a row or an occasional hard day here and there, this style of workout can be motivating and rewarding… as long as you stay injury free.

At the same time, don’t underestimate the value of your time with tortoise. ‘Regular old workouts’ can and should include lots of cross-training, progression, and most of all, enjoyment. The main difference between hare and tortoise is sustainability. You can’t ‘kill it’ on a daily basis. You can hang out with the hare for several weeks or once or twice a week for the long term, but always remember that the tortoise is your reliable bestie.

As you reach for both quick results and long-term success in fitness, stay healthy and…

Stay fit!
