Your calf muscles help you balance and they help propel you forward. They support your foot and ankle and they help provide stability at the knee. While many of us throw a few calf raises into our workouts, we don’t often dedicate a whole lot of our time to developing calf strength. I like to do these exercises barefoot but it’s fine to do them with your shoes on. In fact, if you don’t regularly focus on barefoot work please wear shoes. To learn about barefoot strengthening, go here.
Use good judgment with the exercises below, particularly if you are adding a jump. Start with a heel raise and work on your form. Then, add in a low jump when appropriate. Increase the height of your jumps as you become stronger.
