GMAH Spanish Book Club: El Club de Libros

Overview: This program is designed for students ages 12 and younger of all fluency levels. It’s an ideal support group for families who are learning Spanish as part of their homeschool curriculum. Each month, we work on vocabulary, phrases, and conversation inspired by the book of the month. Previous selections have included books like The Very Hungry Caterpillar, There is a Bird on Your Head, and more.

Group Facilitator: Instructor Leah Gonzalez uses children’s books, games, and crafts to facilitate learning. Leah has her masters in linguistics, is fluent in Spanish, and speaks a bit of German. Her husband is from Colombia and her children are bilingual. She teaches ESL to adult learners, has a popular Youtube channel with Spanish read-alouds for children, and is a published author whose works include Una Navidad Colombiana.  During our meetings – whether they’re remote or in-person – Leah never fails to inspire us with her innovative teaching techniques and encouraging and supportive manner.

Each month, students:

  • Study a different children’s book in Spanish.
  • Meet once on Zoom to go over vocabulary and pronunciation in an interactive session with Leah.
  • Meet once in person at Lutheran Church of the Master (LCM)* for games and activities that reinforce learning of the vocabulary, pronunciation, and use in conversation.

Parents are encouraged to participate and learn with their children.
