I love tackling homeschool art projects because – and I know this is an overused phrase, but really – the possibilities are endless. Here’s a look at our spring 2022 homeschool art projects – a large collaborative group project, presents for Mother’s Day, and two student-led art tutorials.

Below are plenty of photos from the projects along with the materials and processes we used for each.

Collaborative Collage Project

At Belmar Library in Lakewood, Colorado

This project is currently on display at our library and is part of our 2022 service-learning project to promote water conservation and awareness. It represents the ways we use water and the wildlife that relies on it.

Materials

  • Poster board. I bought a pack of 25 sheets for this project.
  • Glue
  • Tissue Paper
  • Items you want to use up that can be glued on a collage (I had gems, wool, and yarn)
  • Hot glue
  • Watercolor or tempera paint for backgrounds

Prep

  • Determine layout of the collage.
  • Draw items (e.g. animals) on poster board and cut them out. Cut into sections if they will be on more than one panel.

Group Work

  • Students collaged their item (e.g. animal or section of animal). We did this as a group.
  • Families paint group of poster board panels for backgrounds. I had them do this at home and return them to me.

Finishing

  • I hot glued all the collage pieces to the backgrounds.
  • For continuity, I did add some watercolor paint to a few pieces with white background showing.

Mother’s Day Presents

This is such a fun annual event. The moms drop their kids off with me and we make a present, something simple for Mother’s Day. I was just coming off the big collage project, so this one was even simpler than usual. Still, I loved what the kids created.

Materials

  • Craft Sticks
  • Hot Glue
  • Yarn
  • Card stock or heavy paper cut to size
  • Paper bags
  • Markers
  • Stapler

Prep

  • Glue craft sticks to make a frame
  • Glue piece of yarn for hanger

Student Work

  • Create whatever they want for their piece of art
  • Glue it in frame
  • Put it in a paper bag with a small tag and staple it shut

Student-Led Art Projects

Finally, we enjoyed two water related crafts led by students for our Know Your H2O project. You can access the video tutorials by clicking on the images below:

I hope these have inspired you to get creative, whether you follow our lead or go in a completely different direction!
