As we gear up for spring and summer, I thought I’d share a few highlights of our group’s winter field trips from 2021-22.

What a difference from a year ago! While not everyone is in a position to welcome back groups at this point, we were still able to do enough to remind us just how awesome homeschool field trips are.

Denver Art Museum: Whistler to Cassat Exhibit

One of the perks of being close Denver is access to exhibits like this, with over 100 paintings from museums all over the world. The exhibit included audio tours and I was especially intrigued by the selection of wall colors for the different rooms.

For most of us, this was also our first visit since the newly remodeled North building opened. It’s too much to do in one day, but we’ll go again soon.

Denver Museum of Nature and Science: Guitars and IMAX

DMNS rarely disappoints. Case in point with the temporary exhibit “Guitar: The Instrument that Rocked the World”. Among other things, I now know why B.B. King called his guitar Lucille. (You’ll have to look it up.)

We also enjoyed “Wings Over Water” an IMAX movie about the prairie pothole region, which spans over 300,000 square miles in North America and is home to millions of birds and other species.

Indoor Sky Diving: I-Fly

This was so much fun! If you get a chance, go. Enough said.

Colorado Symphony’s Musicurious

Our group has been going to the Musicurious performances for many years. Geared for students, these hour-long offerings give us a taste of the symphony with some tidbits of learning. This year’s “Lift Every Voice” was particularly engaging with the addition of dancers from several professional Denver area troupes like Cleo Parker Robinson Dance and Fiesta Colorado Dance Company.

Voyager, The Musical

Although it seems a long time ago, I have to give special mention to our field trip in November to Fiske Planetarium in Boulder to see “Voyager, the Musical”. This original musical followed the story of the Voyager spacecraft.

One of my sons wrote a National History Day paper on Voyager a few years back, so the chance to revisit the story and Carl Sagan’s incredibly moving Pale Blue Dot speech was a special treat for my family. It also bears mentioning that Matheatre’s managing director Sadie Bowman is a former homeschooler.

If you have middle and high school students, be on the lookout for Matheatre’s performances centered around math and science. Their current production is “Curie Me Away” about Marie Curie.

If you’d like more info on our homeschool group or any of the venues we visited this past winter, I’ve included links at the bottom of this post.

And, take a look at some of the fun things you’ve done this past winter. In our quest to keep moving forward with homeschooling, we often don’t take the time to look back and appreciate all the amazing things we do each year.
